The nest is located in a forest owned by JSC "Latvia’s State Forests" (LVM), in the monitoring sample area “Murmastiene” near the village of Barkava. The eagles built the nest in 2019 and nested successfully. 2021 and 2022 were also successful in terms of nesting. In 2023, a female eagle laid an egg and abandoned it for unknown reasons.

The eagles built the nest in 2023, however, soon after the egg was laid, another male eagle, that did not provide food to the incubating female, left, and the nesting was stopped.

This location near the village of Aizkuja is a dedicated sample area for monitoring lesser spotted eagles. In 2020 the nest was successfully taken by common buzzards and two young birds flew out of it. In 2021, lesser spotted eagles successfully nested here. In 2022, eagles laid an egg, but the male did not bring food to the female and nesting was stopped. In 2023, the nest was not occupied.
This is a nesting and feeding habitat for golden eagles near the nest. In the early hours of the morning, the voices of birds nesting in the bog can be heard. Sometimes a moose or a wild boar can be spotted crossing the bog.
