This year, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) has concluded agreements for the construction of forest roads in Zemgale region in a total length of 84 km. Currently, construction works have been completed in the amount of 35.4 km, of which 27.2 km have already been put into operation.
Construction works have also been completed on the so-called Border Road shown in the picture. It is located on the border between Zemgale and North Kurzeme region.
The construction works were performed by SIA “Meliorceltnieks”, which is a long-term cooperation partner of LVM in the construction of forest roads and the restoration of forest drainage systems in state forests.
High-quality forest roads mean regular timber deliveries to Latvian wood processing companies, which provide stable employment opportunities in the regions of Latvia.
Forest roads also play an important role in reforestation and maintenance, as well as in fighting fires. Moreover, the roads built and renovated by LVM can be used by any nature friend heading for forest bounties or spending their free time in nature.
Since its foundation in 1999, LVM through implementing sustainable forest management has paid one billion euros to state and local government budgets. LVM's economic activities are carried out by maintaining and recovering forests, taking care of nature conservation, recreation opportunities and increasing timber volumes, as well as investing in expanding the forestland and developing forest infrastructure – renovation of drainage systems and forest road construction.
