As schools are getting ready for the new school year, in September JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) will offer 6th graders an opportunity to learn about forest in study trips in the open air called LVM Forest Expeditions. The application takes place from 10 to 25 August and schools can choose which of the eight forest regions of Latvia they wish to visit.

The content of the expeditions is designed in accordance with the competence approach and the new content of education in natural sciences; moreover, it gives teachers an opportunity to manage the learning process outdoors, where it is possible to ensure a distance of two metres. The application form is available on the website www.lvm.lv/ekspedicija. A total of 320 expeditions are planned to the largest cities in eight regions of Latvia, and they are to take place throughout September.

The events are offered free of charge, but the number of places is limited. Below are the dates of the expeditions scheduled in 2020. Schools should submit one application for all classes wishing to participate in the expedition.

LVM Forest Expeditions are a unique opportunity for 6th-grade students to study natural sciences in forest enjoying a joint adventure. They encourage students to understand how knowledge gained in science can be used in their everyday life; students will have to perform practical tasks themselves in order to develop an understanding of forest conservation for future generations.

Forest expeditions for 6th-grade students will take place for the fourth year in a row and there are about 6 000 participants every year. Throughout the entire school year, participants of Latvia’s State Forest Expeditions have an opportunity to visit three permanent LVM tourist facilities: Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete, LVM Kalsnava Arboretum and LVM Vijciems Cone Drying Facility. The expedition time should be coordinated individually with the information centres of these facilities. Before going to the forest, students need to have acquired one class about the diverse meaning of the forest.

Forest expeditions are organized by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” in cooperation with the National Centre for Education, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Innovation at the University of Latvia, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, JSC “Latvijas Finieris”, JSC “Husqvarna” and the society “Zaļās mājas”.
