This spring, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) carried out partial recultivation of the mineral extraction site “Gailenes” in Ape Municipality, where soil for the new forest has been prepared on an area of three hectares – it is planned to plant almost 10 thousand top-quality pine seedlings there.
In the course of the reclamation works, dismantling of mining equipment, ground (soil cover) relocation works, covering slopes and horizontal surfaces with plant soil were performed.
“The recultivation of the mining site in parallel with the mining works allows for efficient management of the territories owned by LVM, ensuring continuous implementation of economic activities,” says Ģirts Zvaigzne, LVM Zemes dzīles Planning Manager.
Endorsement for safety and responsibility
It is forbidden to enter the territories of mineral extraction sites managed by LVM without approval. As a result of uncoordinated actions of motorcyclists, both extraction and reclaimed areas prepared for afforestation or already reforested are damaged, thus damaging the ground cover and increasing the possibility of fire.
Public events planned and organized by both natural and legal persons must be coordinated in advance so that the company, balancing the various economic, environmental and social interests as well as safety aspects, can ensure a comprehensive assessment of the circumstances and decide on the possibilities of organizing the event.
LVM manages more than 100 quarries throughout the entire territory of Latvia. Quarries have been selected carefully so as not to endanger the environment but at the same time meet the needs of the company and the economy for sand, sand gravel and other minerals.
