In the course of construction works of the forest drainage system “Zemgaļi”, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) carried out the reconstruction of state importance water drainage “Lāčupīte” in a 5.6 km long section. The main drain of the drainage system is the River Lāčupīte, which provides drainage of water from both forest and agricultural lands.
In the agricultural territory, the Lāčupīte was cleaned by State Limited Liability Company “Zemkopības ministrijas nekustamie īpašumi”, while in the forest area these works were performed by LVM.
In cooperation with environmental experts, some sections of the river remained intact, thus preserving the natural qualities of the river. In order to diversify the river ecosystem, special extensions have been created on the banks of the Lāčupīte – bays or pockets. This work was completed in mid-April so as not to affect fish and other aquatic animals.
Reconstruction of the forest drainage system in Engure forest district was started already in the autumn of 2019. The total area of the facility is 950 ha, the length of the ditches to be rebuilt is 24 km.
The construction works will facilitate the operation of the forest land drainage system, water collection and drainage as well as regulate the moisture regime in the basin area; it will also improve the sustainability of land use.
The construction works are expected to be completed by October 2020. The works are carried out by SIA “Meliorceltnieks”.
