Popular tourist facilities, bog trails, wooden observation towers, footbridges, well-maintained recreation sites with wooden tables and benches - these are more than 300 tourist places, which are regularly maintained and restored by JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM). Since 12 June, all LVM tourist facilities are open to visitors, including those that were closed during the state of emergency declared in the country to limit the spread of the virus. However, people must continue to be responsible when in forest and keep a distance from other forest visitors.
“We need to put up with and adapt to the new post-pandemic safety rules. We call on every forest visitor to be responsible and to treat the infrastructure of recreation places with care, not to litter in the forest, not to make an open flame outside specially installed camp-fire places during the forest fire risk period, as well as to observe a distance of two metres from other forest visitors,” says Edmunds Linde, LVM Silviculture Planning Manager.
LVM reminds that it is forbidden to drop burning or smouldering matches, cigarette butts or other items, make fires (except in specially arranged sites, which prevent fire from spreading) during the flammable period. It is also strictly prohibited to leave fires unattended, burn waste, drive motor vehicles in forests and marshes off the road and perform any other activities that may cause fire.
According to the data of the State Forest Service, there were 1110 forest fires recorded in the territory of Latvia in 2019, damaging a total area of 821.67 hectares. As many as 87.6% of the forest fires were caused by careless handling of fire, and in 4.3% of the cases it was due to arson. A hundred forest fires have already been eliminated in the territory managed by LVM in 2020, with fire affecting almost 60 ha of forest land.LVM offers tourist facilities for all tastes and ages!
