News of the season

You will always find something new and unusual at LVM nurseries. One of the news of this year`s spring season: the northern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) varieties 'Chandler' and 'Polaris'. These are valuable plants that are worth planting in spring so that you can enjoy the first berries already in August.

Rhododendrons are also new this year. For example, the Japanese rhododendron is a 1-2 metres high and 1-1.5 metres wide, glamorously flowering bush with orange to salmon pink flowers, which blooms in May and June. Rhododendrons are planted in sandy or peaty, water-permeable, loose, humus-rich, acidic soils with pH 4.0-6.0. They bloom more glamorously in sunny places, in half-shadow.

Flowering news

The Latvian Dendrologist Society has chosen the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) as the Tree of the Year 2020. Other tree and shrub seedlings rarely develop under these trees, because they form dense crowns, thus creating strong shading. Beeches themselves like shade and they can grow in the shade of other trees. This feature is used, creating dense, wide, medium and high hedges. And it is one of the few deciduous trees that is used in trimmed hedges, which retains the branches of last year's glossy brown leaves until spring, enhancing the enclosing effect.

LVM nurseries offer the European beech tree called ‘Purpurea’ with a dark purple foliage, that can reach a height of 15-18 metres and a width of 9-12 metres. It grows well in nutrient-rich, moist, water-permeable soils.
