Encouraging people to spend their free time in nature, JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) over the period of 20 years has established and maintains more than 360 freely accessible recreation places throughout the territory of Latvia. Residents and guests of Daugavpils Municipality can once again enjoy a rest at a well-maintained and restored recreation site next to the Great Boulder of Nīcgale, which was destroyed by vandals last year.
“At the end of 2018, the spacious eight-corner wooden shelter, benches and other wooden infrastructure elements that had become an integral part of the Great Boulder of Nīcgale recreation site, were burnt down, denying cultural and active recreation to local residents, school groups and tourists. Every year, LVM invests significant resources in maintaining free recreation areas, therefore we encourage people to act responsibly with the established recreational infrastructure in the forest so that the company does not have to consider the usefulness of restoring and maintaining damaged sites,” says Edmunds Linde, Executive Director LVM Silviculture.

In 2012, within the framework of the social project “Map of the Great Places of Latvia”, the inhabitants of Latvia recognized the Great Boulder of Nīcgale as the largest great bounder in Latvia in the category “Earth”. It is a legendary tourist attraction in Latgale, Daugavpils Municipality, Nīcgale Rural Territory.
LVM develops, improves and maintains sites of public importance in different places in Latvia: sightseeing facilities, recreation areas, trails, observation towers and parks, offering various recreation opportunities to Latvian residents and guests free of charge.
