Every year, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) invites schools to go out in nature by offering varied and exciting LVM school programmes that, depending on the age and skills of the students, promote student connection with the forest environment and raise their general awareness of the processes taking place in nature. Also in 2019/2020, there will be a number of exciting options for how to connect learning with real life through competence education on the forest and its values.
The pre-school programme “Pigman's Detectives” (Cūkmena detektīvi) and the programme “Mother Nature Masterclass” (Mammadaba meistarklase) that is intended for students of grades 1-6 will be open for applications until 20 September, and participants of these programs will receive additional training materials already in October. In turn, the LVM Forest Game for grade 7-9 students will be open for applications until November. LVM Bio-economy School contest will reach its peak in early 2020 when grade 10-12 students will be invited to submit their creative works on what the bio-economy is.
Teachers also have an opportunity to learn! In the framework of the “School 2030” project, a new interdisciplinary topic “Forests for 8th and 9th Grade Students” has been developed in cooperation with experts of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Innovation at the University of Latvia and LVM; the course will start on 26 September. The course is free and the number of participants is limited.
Every year, in cooperation with the National Centre for Education, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” offers schools an opportunity to learn from nature. From pre-school children to university students and teachers, everyone has the opportunity to walk along Latvia’s state forest trails and enhance their school-based knowledge with hands-on nature assignments!
Each year, more than 20 000 children, students and teachers explore the forest in the diverse LVM school programmes. LVM has been offering environmental education in Latvian schools already since 2005; it is based on the International Environmental Education Programme “Learning about Forests”, which is implemented in more than 20 countries worldwide.
