Risk of Fire Increases in Latvian Forests

With the dry and sunny weather, the risk of fire in forests is increasing. Therefore JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) reminds everyone to avoid any open flames in the forest or in its immediate vicinity.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has declared a high fire hazard throughout Latvia, so be careful and cautious when in forest to avoid a devastating forest fire.

In the past Easter holidays (19-22 April), several forest fires were eliminated in the territory managed by LVM, the largest of which set out in Bauska Forest District, where forest burned in an area of 6.5 ha, in Skaistkalne Forest District in an area of 6 ha and in Līvbērze Forest District - 11.6 ha. 

It should be remembered that, according to the State Forest Service order, with this year's 19 April a fire-hazardous period has been set in forests throughout the country, and every one must comply with the fire safety regulations.

In forests and marshes, it is prohibited to:

  • Drop burning or smouldering matches, cigarette butts or other items;
  • Make fires (except in specially arranged sites, which prevent fire from spreading outside);
  • Leave fire unattended;
  • Burn waste;
  • Drive motor vehicles in forests and marshes off the road;
  • Perform any other activities that may cause a fire.
