Schools Apply for Latvia’s State Forest Expeditions for 6th-graders

Between 10 April and 10 May each school in Latvia can apply for Latvia’s State Forest Expeditions for 6th-graders organised in the academic year 2019/2020. A total of 320 expeditions are planned in major cities in eight regions of Latvia, which will take place throughout the month of September.

JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Innovation at the University of Latvia, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” and JSC “Latvijas Finieris” call on school students and teachers to head for a forest expedition. It is a unique opportunity for 6th-grade students to study natural sciences in forest in a common adventure! According to the standard of natural sciences, the knowledge acquired by school students in Latvia’s State Forests expeditions can be used in their everyday life; students will be aware of the human impact on the forest ecosystem, they will perform practical and creative tasks, as well as raise awareness of the preservation of forests for future generations.

Schools are requested to submit one application for all classes wishing to participate in the expedition. Below are the dates of the expeditions scheduled for 2019:

11., 12., 18., 19., 25. September Rīga (Rietumvidzeme, Ropažu route)
10., 11., 12., 17., 18. September Rēzekne (Ziemeļlatgale, Taudejāņu route)
11., 13., 17., 19., 25. September Daugavpils (Dienvidlatgale, Kalupes route)
5., 10., 12., 17., 19. September Rīga (Vidusdaugava, Tomes route)
6., 11., 18., 20., 25. September Jelgava (Zemgale, Olaines route) 
5., 12., 19., 24., 26. September Ventspils (Ziemeļkurzeme, Puzes route)
6., 10., 12., 17., 19. September Liepāja (Dienvidkurzeme, Kalvenes route)

This is already the third year that JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” has been organising forest expeditions for 6th-grade students and more than 6 000 students participated in it the last year. For the entire school year, participants of Latvia’s State Forest Expeditions has the opportunity to visit three permanent LVM tourism objects: Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete, LVM Kalsnava Arboretum and LVM Vijciems cone-seed nursery, by individually coordinating the expedition time with the information centres of these facilities. Before going to the forest, students need to have had one class about the diverse meaning of the forest in school settings beforehand.
