To mark the International Day of Forests, which is celebrated annually on 21 March, and this year's theme "Forests and Education", JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) calls on everyone interested to assess and vote for the most attractive video message made by school students for the scholarship competition "LVM Bio-economy School".
For the third year in the scholarship competition organised by LVM, young people have the opportunity not only to gain new knowledge, to work creatively and actively and to meet experienced forest industry experts, but also to share their understanding of the growing role of bio-economy in today's life.
Voting for the best video will be open from 21 March to 10 April on the Facebook page "Izzini mežu, Latvija" (Learning about Forest, Latvia) by pressing "Like" under the favourite videos. The authors of the video messages nominated for scholarships (in alphabetical order):
Scholarships will be awarded to the authors of the three best videos whose works earn the highest overall rating of the jury (75% of the total score) and Facebook user rating (25% of the total score).
The competition "LVM Bio-economy School" was organised in three stages: the initial task for the students was to create an attractive and topical poster on the theme proposed by the jury "Forest for Latvia. The Next 100". The authors of the best works, who not only successfully reflected the essence of bio-economy in their work, but also linked it to their everyday life, were invited to participate in the second round of the competition. During the exploratory expedition together with LVM experts, the participants found answers to the questions they were interested in and learnt about sustainable forest management in practice, in nature.
The inspiration and new knowledge gained during the expedition were useful for participants in the third round of the competition, when they were asked to make a one-minute-video message about bio-economy, its role in everyday life and in the future.
LVM Bio-economy School scholarship competition is organised by JSC "Latvia's State Forests" in cooperation with the society "Zaļās mājas", JSC "Latvijas Finieris", LLC "Rīgas meži" and the National Centre for Education.
Every year on 21 March, the UN focuses on the role of the forest type. In 2019, every Forest Day participant is invited to explore forest education in order to learn to love the forest and to help promote sustainable forest management and biodiversity.
In the framework of the International Forest Day, an international competition was also announced, where teachers from all over the world showed how they educate their children about the forest in their country. We are proud that Lolita Šteinberga, teacher of Mammadaba Embassy Sigulda Primary School No. 1, is among the winners of the competition.
