Already for the third year, JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) LVM Bio-economy School scholarship competition calls on secondary school students from all over Latvia to compete with their peers on matters concerning circular economy, as well as to supplement their knowledge of the forest sector and related future challenges. The first round of the competition has come to an end, and the participants who will head for an exploratory forest expedition on 22 February and visit JSC "Latvijas Finieris" factories are already chosen.
For the 1st round of the competition, the task was to create a poster on what bio-economy is, and the main theme for 2019 is "Forest for Latvia. The Next 100". This year, the jury's work was particularly challenging since almost 100 works from all over Latvia were submitted for the competition. The jury chose 36 works by the following criteria: understanding of the topic, the connection with the everyday life of young people, originality and creativity. A list of the 2nd round participants is available here.
The acquired knowledge and new impressions will be useful in creating a video message for the UN International Day of Forests, which will have the main role in awarding the LVM Bio-economy School scholarship. This year, JSC "Latvijas Finieris" and SIA "Rīgas meži" will grant additional awards of 250 euros for innovative representation of wood products.
Bio-economy is based on three basic principles of sustainable development: nature, economy and society, and represents the transition from fossil to renewable resources. It involves the circulation of closed-loop products, where a waste product of one process is a raw material of the following process. Bio-economy opens up opportunities for the development of the Latvian economy, based on its strongest sectors - forestry and agriculture.
LVM Bio-economy School scholarship competition for secondary school students was organised in cooperation with the society "Zaļās mājas", JSC “Latvijas Finieris”, LLC "Rīgas meži" and the National Centre for Education.
