The season of gardening works is coming to an end and on 18 October, the Embassy of Latvia's State Forests in Riga, 1 Vaiņodes Street, in cooperation with the Institute of Horticulture will host a Day in an Orchard. During the day, scientists will tell stories about research and latest discoveries in horticulture, there will be tasting and consultations, as well as an opportunity to purchase products offered by the Institute of Horticulture.
From 10.00-15.00, visitors will have an opportunity to taste and buy apples, pears of various varieties, as well as a wide range of healthy fruit products produced at the Institute: pear, cherry, sea buckthorn, red currant juice; Japanese quince, black currant, sea buckthorn, gooseberry-plum, Japanese quince-strawberry syrups; fruit tea; varieties of candid peel (Japanese quince, cherries, gooseberries, strawberries, peas, plums), as well as fruit and berry pomace powders (blackcurrant, cranberry, raspberry).
From 12.45 to 14.00, Edīte Kaufmane and Dalija Segliņa will give lectures on issues concerning growing of fruit trees, selection of varieties. Dr.biol. Edīte Kaufmane has for many years worked as the Director of the Institute of Horticulture and is currently leading the Institute's research work, specialising in the selection of plums, apricots and Japanese quince, and the development of cultivation technologies; she is also a co-author of a number of books and the author of many articles. Dr.sc.ing. Dalija Segliņa is the leading researcher of the Institute, Head of the Division for Processing and Biochemistry. Her work involves researching the suitability of different fruit varieties for different types of processing, development of new products and processing technologies, and exploring the use of gardening by-products (pomace, leaves, shoots, etc.) for the development of innovative products.
The Embassy of Latvia's State Forests is a place to have a dialogue with forest, and take a small part of forest home with you.
