At the end of August, dangerous historical evidence - unexploded wartime charges - was found in JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) mining site "Svente I".
Four charges were excavated in the course of extraction of mineral materials. The contractors working at the mining site contacted the State Police, but then it was decided to contact representatives of the National Armed Forces (NAF) who neutralised the charges. Currently, all territory of the mining site is being searched.
Post-war ammunition is not a rarity in Latvia, especially in areas where battles have taken place or trenches and support positions have been formed. Workers must be particularly careful when performing excavation works in mining sites and forest infrastructure facilities, and when finding explosive items they should contact the NAF to perform ammunition neutralisation and carry out extra searches of the respective site.
LVM manages more than 100 quarries, which are located throughout the territory of the company, both deep in forests and closer to populated areas. Quarry development sites are carefully selected in order not to endanger the environment, but at the same time meet the needs of the company and the national economy for sand, sand-gravel and other minerals.
