JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) has commissioned the new 3.756 km long forest road in Skaistkalne constructed by its cooperation partner SIA "Mikor". The new road Mežvidu ceļš has been put into operation and has been constructed in an excellent quality that will allow the road to be used for many years.
LVM implements its road construction investment programme to ensure continued availability of raw materials to Latvian wood-processing companies regardless of the weather conditions.
Good forest roads mean regular wood supplies to Latvian wood-processing companies, which provide regular, well-paid work to up to 25% of the total number of the employed in certain regions of Latvia, thus preventing Latvian residents from going abroad to earn for living.
Forest roads are built from the company's own funds, but serve the whole society. Roads are not closed, they are properly maintained and repaired. They are used by logging machinery, anglers, mushroom-pickers, hunters, and holidaymakers.
Good forest roads play an important role not only in forest restoration and maintenance, but also in fire fighting. Using these roads, fire fighting technique can quickly reach the place of accident, thus preventing devastating disasters from spreading much wider.
Since its foundation in 1999, Joint Stock Company "Latvia’s State Forests" implementing sustainable forest management has paid one billion euros to state and local government budgets. LVM's economic activities are carried out by maintaining and recovering forests, taking care of nature conservation, recreation opportunities and increasing timber volumes, as well as investing in expanding the forest land and developing forest infrastructure - renovation of drainage systems and forest road construction. The volume of timber in the forests managed by LVM increases by 12 million cubic metres annually.
