On 23 June, the Senior Environmental Expert of JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM), together with representatives of the Latvian Fund for Nature, helped save a white-tailed eagle's baby who had fallen out of its nest.
The smallest of the two babies fell out of the nest in LVM North Kurzeme region. This event was observed not only by the experts, but also by enthusiasts who are actively following the bird's daily routine with the help of on-line cameras.
Currently, the bird is taken care of at Uģis Bergmanis' bird rehabilitation station "Tiltakalni" in Madona Municipality Barkava Rural Territory. Days are very busy here - not only this eagle is recovering at the station, but also three other white-tailed eagles, two lesser spotted eagles and one greater spotted eagle.
"The bird is all right. It is fed with fish provided by benefactors. In about a month, the eagle will be placed in a special tower away from areas inhabited by people and will be accustomed for life in the wild," says the expert.
LVM in cooperation with experts from the Latvian Fund for Nature conducts monitoring of the population of white-tailed eagles in state-owned forests, as well as provides protection of their nesting sites. Follow the development of the events at the portal www.dabasdati.lv.
Since its foundation in 1999, Joint Stock Company "Latvia’s State Forests" implementing sustainable forest management has paid one billion euros to state and local government budgets. LVM's economic activities are carried out by maintaining and recovering forests, taking care of nature conservation, recreation opportunities and increasing timber volumes, as well as investing in expanding the forestland and developing forest infrastructure - renovation of drainage systems and forest road construction. The volume of timber in the forests managed by LVM increases by 12 million cubic metres annually.
