On Wednesday, 21 March, representatives of JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) held a meeting with Aivija Everte, Collection Development Manager at the National Library of Latvia, to hand over at the disposal of the National Library historical materials - 8 maps and 10 books - found in LVM Dienvidkurzeme Customer Centre.
"The gift includes hand-drawn maps of Klīve Forestry made in four different years. The first of them dates back to 1850, the latest to 1948. These data allow researchers to track the changes in forest stands and land use of a specific area over a period of one century. Also the small, hand-drawn map of Liepmuiža Dunduri and copies of three maps of Kurzeme forestries made in the 30ies of the 20th century are of special interest," says Aivija Everte.
Among the books handed over to the museum there is a book about hunting published in Germany in 1934, a book of sermons translated from German by the 19th century Latvian poet, book distributor and translator Ansis Leitāns, a handbook issued by the Baltic Forest Union in 1903, as well as several other books, which will complement the historical stock of the National Library of Latvia.
"We are grateful to LVM for this gift to the National Library! The materials received are an important addition to our library of maps and a valuable source of information for students, researchers and other interested parties," the expert points out.
LVM Dienvidkurzeme Customer Centre is located in the premises of Boja Manor in Kazdanga Rural Territory. In the course of centuries, the owners of the building have changed several times: during the Second World War, there was a military hospital in the manor, in the post-war years it was used as a local kolkhoz warehouse, but until 2004, the manor hosted the Forest Museum.
