Mārtiņš Kalniņš, JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) Environmental Planning Specialist, has published a book "Dragonflies (Odonata) in Latvia. Research History, Bibliography and Spread from the 18th Century to 2016" (Spāres (Odonata) Latvijā. Pētījumu vēsture, bibliogrāfija un izplatība no 18. gadsimta līdz 2016. gadam), which is the first such extensive work on invertebrates in Latvian.
The book summarises information on dragonfly research and researchers over a period exceeding 100 years. The book includes 67 dragonfly spread maps, 500 photos and more than 270 other images, which will be appreciated by both professionals, and anyone who wishes to get acquainted with the different species of dragonflies living in Latvia.
The publication contains translations of a number of key facts and descriptions into English, thus contributing to the recognition of Latvia and its natural values abroad, promoting research on dragonflies in Europe, and representing Latvia as part of Europe.
The book opening ceremony will be held in Latvia 100 Information Centre (National Library of Latvia, 3 Mūkusalas Street, Riga) on 2 February 2018.
Mārtiņš Kalniņš is a biologist and author of more than 100 publications. The expert studies invertebrates, birds and amphibians in Latvia, as well as works on the introduction of sustainable solutions in economic activity and nature conservation processes.
