On 25 January, the Embassy of Latvia's State Forests will host an event called "A Day in an Orchard", where visitors will have an opportunity to find both creative and practical ideas for planting and maintaining a garden. Experts will share their knowledge about issues related to fruit-tree cultivation, care and selection of varieties.
From 9 to 15, visitors will have an opportunity to purchase apples of different varieties, as well as a wide range of fruit products produced by the Institute of Horticulture: pear, cherry, sea buckthorn, currant juice, syrups of various berries and fruit, as well as the healthy and delicious candied fruit and berries.
From 14 to 18, Dr. Agr. Edgars Rubausks and Dr. Ilze Grāvīte will deliver their presentations on various fruit-growing issues.
Dr. Agr. Edgars Rabauskis will introduce topics related to planting and tending of apple and pear trees, paying particular attention to forming of crowns of both young and old fruit trees. He will also share his knowledge about the selection of varieties and rootstocks for different gardens and purposes of use.
In turn, Dr. Ilze Grāvīte will tell the participants about challenges in stone-fruit growing: the choice of the site and the preparation of the soil, the choice of rootstock varieties, as well as the basic principles of cultivation, crown formation and care. During the event, participants will have an opportunity to purchase the recent book published by the specialist titled "Plums. Varieties, Care, Tips and Recipes" that will be useful to any fruit-grower.
The Embassy of Latvia's State Forests is a place where to have a dialogue with the forest, and take a small part of the forest home. The Embassy in Riga, at 1 Vaiņodes Street, is open on weekdays from 9:00 to 18:00, and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 15:00.
