Until 14 July, forest owners are invited to apply for the competition "The Best Maintained Forest" (Sakoptākais mežs), organised by the Latvian Forest Owners' Association. It aims to identify good forestry practices in private forests by promoting sustainable forest management and raising public awareness of preservation of rural cultural environment.
Arnis Muižnieks, Chairman of the Latvian Forest Owners' Association, points out that there are forest owners in Latvia who pay great attention to sustainable forest management; therefore, the organisers of the competition would like to give forest owners an opportunity to learn from each other about the ways how to adopt good management practices.
Contestants will be judged by analysing their contribution to creation of productive and sustainable forest stands, paying attention to restoration, logging, cultivation, forest infrastructure, landscape element planning, scientifically based methods of sustainable forest management.
Top rated forest owners will be honoured at the annual forestry sector awards ceremony "Zelta čiekurs" (Golden Cone).
More information on the course of the competition, as well as the application form are available on the Latvian Forest Owners' Association website, under the section Konkurss “Sakoptākais mežs” (Competition "The Best Maintained Forest").
