In May this year, LVM Jaunmokas Palace received the Green Key certificate, gaining international recognition for considerate use of resources and sustainable environmental development.
For a hotel, hostel or camping site to receive the Green Key eco label, it must meet more than 110 criteria: from considerate of use electricity and water to specifically designed environmental policy documents and personnel training on environmentally friendly daily activities. The criteria are divided into two groups: compulsory and preferable; besides, to maintain the certification, improvements have to be made every year in the group of preferable criteria.
"We already enjoy tangible benefits - lower power consumption thanks to efficient LED lighting installed in all hotel rooms, smaller water consumption, thanks to the installed aerators on water outlets and economic hand-held showers. It is only one "side of the coin". The other, no less important, is employee awareness of environmentally friendly management and its positive impact on the environment in the long term," says Arvis Lagzdiņš, LVM Jaunmokas Palace Manager and Green Key Environmental Coordinator.
The Green Key is a voluntary eco-labelling system, covering more than 2500 hospitality companies in 54 countries. Green Key is a partner of the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations World Tourism Organization for eco-friendly tourism.
