Celebration of the Centennial of Latvia will begin on 4 May with the Embrace Latvia (Apskauj Latviju) campaign. During the Embrace Latvia campaign, one hundred oak trees with special Centenary markings will be planted in a particular order in all 45 municipalities located along the Latvian border. The oak trees will make a spiritual guard of Latvia, symbolically marking the Latvian borderline and strengthening Latvian national unity and sense of belonging.
Oak-tree planting works will start at 9:00 in the morning at the same time from four Latvia’s most distant points. Each municipality has prepared a special festive programme with the participation of local folklore groups, choirs and dance groups, youth guards and 4H organisation (mazpulki), senior state and local government officials, and representatives of the Ministry of the Interior.
