From 2-4 May, supported by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM), “Wood Days” (Koka dienas) or the days of wooden architecture, crafts, industry and design, are to take place in the town of Cēsis. The project aims to display current woodworking technologies, as well as to inform the public about wooden construction advantages, prices and availability in Latvia.
On 2 May, the “Wood Days” will be opened with an international conference, to be held in Cēsis Vidzeme Concert Hall. The conference will bring together architects, manufacturers, designers, technical engineers, scientists, and craftsmen from Latvia, Estonia, Austria, Finland, Italy and the UK. Inspirational wood–industry stories will be presented; design, art, manufacturing, and craft skills will come together as one; issues and problems will be identified and their solutions sought for.
Another event of the “Wood Days” is an exhibition, which is to take place on 3-4 May, where wood production and crafts businesses from Vidzeme and Latvia will present their products and technologies.
During the exhibition, visitors will have an opportunity to attend a design workshop, run by designers Charles Bourrier and Elīna Bušmane, as well as a seminar on the life cycle of wooden houses, led by Helmut Krapmeier. There will also be a competition where business owners will assign a mock project with a deadline for completion, and interdisciplinary teams will compete to come up with the best solutions.
Those interested will have an opportunity to attend a wooden building restoration workshop, which will include a theoretical seminar and a practical workshop on restoring architectural details, using traditional tools, paints and materials. The workshop also aims at developing an action plan for rescue and rebirth of Cēsis historic wooden buildings.
