Last weekend, on 3-4 February, Latvian School Winter Olympic Festival took place in Ērgļi and on Mount Viešūra kalns, bringing together more than a thousand of young people who competed for the awards. Active recreation in nature, sports spirit and good company united both the festival participants and their supporters from all over Latvia.
Festival competitions were held in eight winter sports disciplines: cross country skiing, alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, snowboarding, skating, toboggans and winter orienteering, as well as in the relay. Cross-country skiing, which usually attracts more participants than other disciplines, also this year maintained the status of the most popular sports competition. This year, an unexpectedly large number of participants took part in the winter orienteering competitions and in the great school relay - sports disciplines that this year were included in the programme for the very first time in the history of the festival.
Teams from Riga French Lyceum, Madona State Gymnasium, Riga State Gymnasium No. 2 and Sigulda State Gymnasium won the greatest number of medals.
This year's competition programme included both sports competitions and a variety of entertaining and educational activities. In spare time, participants had the opportunity to watch demonstrations in curling, learn theory and practical skills in guiding drones, participate in drone pilot competitions, enjoy DJ sets, compete in Jenga game or just have a good time with friends.
