Last year's Christmas tree as a jewellery holder, wooden décors and key rings, earrings with Latvian signs, pins made of small coloured pencils, knitted gloves and embroidered dolls - one could find all this and even more at the Latvian Young Enterprise Christmas Fair in shopping centre “Domina” organised by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and Business Education Association “Junior Achievement Latvia” (JA Latvia). In honouring ancestral traditions and the power of nature, looking for new solutions to ordinary things, the fair witnessed an unprecedented number of participants - around 170 young enterprises from 64 schools in Latvia.
Within its framework, JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) presented awards to two young enterprises, which were found by the jury to be most environment-friendly, both in terms of the product itself, as well as its packaging, using recycled and environment-friendly materials. The young enterprise "Skalu puikas" of Krote Kronvalds Atis Elementary School, which had developed pine splints and paper briquettes impregnated with stearin, was announced the winner in the category "Environment-friendly Product" in the group of elementary schools. In the group of secondary schools, the young enterprise "REGREE" of Riga State Gymnasium No.1 was recognised as the most environment-friendly.
School students offered both traditional handicraft products, as well as non-traditional solutions to ordinary things. As always, wood and wood products were very popular; only this year Latvian signs were used more extensively in wood products. Wood has become a piece of jewellery, a background for a work of art and an assistant in organising things. And much more...
Ancient symbols could be found in a number of handicrafts. There were also a variety of other ideas and solutions for customary things that might be a wonderful supplement to Christmas gifts. And, of course, innovative products – such as LED lamps in the form of a cloud, which may be lit for 50 thousand hours.
Product quality, stands and performance of the young enterprises were evaluated by a jury composed of experienced professionals, entrepreneurs and academics, representing 25 companies and institutions.
