A Quarter of All Kindergartens in Latvia Participate in Eco Program “Pigman’s Detectives”

More than four thousand children from 159 kindergartens in Latvia will take part in an eco program about environmentally friendly lifestyle. To become true forest detectives, children will master four different topics about the environment: dirty secrets of the forest, following Pigman’s footsteps, forest in a toy box, and grow oxygen. At the end of the school year, Pigman (Cūkmens), the patron of clean forests, will visit 30 the most active kindergartens.

Ilze Kanajeva-Salnā, teacher at Sigulda’s kindergarten “Ābelīte”, in her application form says that every day together with her colleagues she tries to spend as much time as possible in nature, so that children could learn and explore nature which is all around us. In this program, children can improve their knowledge and skills of how not to pollute nature and take care of it. They can learn how to make friends with nature”, she says.

Children who applied for the program will be able to acquire forest studies quite soon. By 1 November, Pigman will send to all participants a secret bag with study materials, games, and figurines for more successful implementation of the program.

“I am satisfied that I have an even bigger number of nature friends “in my footsteps” who want to explore the forest, which is all around us. This year, same as last year, children will have a chance to learn so many new things and reveal many forest secrets within the program. Together with teachers, they will go outside, thereby discovering the majesty of nature and its positive effect on people. They will also learn about the process how the forest grows by sowing seeds and observing the development of the seedlings. I am certain that children will enjoy the activities and after graduating the program they will be more knowledgeable and able to teach what they have learned to their parents and friends. Of course, all the time I will follow children’s activities during the program so that discovering things would bring joy”, says Pigman starting the second eco program school year in kindergartens.

JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” eco program “Pigman’s Detectives” is intended for 5-7-year-old children. It is based on four topics, and through games, dances, songs, fairy tales, and different visualizations kids will solve tasks of detectives, as well as evaluate the good and the bad in the forest. Each topic is designed according to the principle of see, hear, listen, take action, at the same time foreseeing active participation in the games.
