Lake Zebrus, the biggest lake in Dobele Municipality, that always has been well known for its ambitious catches of zanders, breams, eels, is still tempting for confident anglers, nature and active recreation enthusiasts, as well as families with kids. As this spring JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) decided to manage lakes as an important public place, local establishment “Niedras” is now providing boat rental services. It is also possible to purchase a fishing license there. However, nature lovers can enjoy the lake scenery for free, relax in a facilitated resting area with tables and benches, shelter under a wooden pergola when it is raining. They also have an opportunity to make a bonfire in a specially designed fireplace, watch birds from the observation tower and have fun on the volleyball court.
To improve visitors’ safety in Lake Zebrus Recreation Center, insecure wooden constructions and houses have been removed. LVM has created and manages more than 300 recreation places in Latvia, additionally managing four lakes. Each year, these facilities are inspected and, if necessary, they are improved and restored.
“Analysis of LVM Lake Zebrus Boat Center Tourist Service shows the interest of tourists and anglers about the lake has been decreasing over the past years. Capital investments that are needed each year to maintain the boat base did not pay off. For that reason, it was decided to give up the present maintenance system, but sustaining the opportunity to visit the lake for free at any time. There are many local tourism service providers”, explains Kristaps Didže, “LVM Recreation and Hunting” Park Unit Manager.
Fishing licenses for Lake Zebrus are available on website www.epakalpojumi.lv under section e-Loms or in camp site “Niedras”. Also one-day and annual licences are available. Day license is intended for fishing from Lake Zebrus banks, a boat, and on ice, except for fishing from a boat in May.
The lake is rich in fish: pikes, breams, zanders, silver breams, tenches, eels, roaches, and crucian carps. In collaboration with Dobele Municipality and Fish Fond, fish stocks are supplemented in accordance with lake fisheries operating instructions.
Starting from this June, LVM address predatory fish anglers to be considerate and responsible, and to release big fish catches back into the lake, in order to increase fish resources in water bodies. Contest “atlaid mammu!” (Release the Mother!) in collaboration with nature and fish friend Māris Olte, will take place until the first frost in all four lakes managed by LVM: Lake Lielauce that is tempting not only with its abundant pike and perch catches but also with floating wooden houses for spending a night; Lake Kaiņieris that is perfect not only for fishing but also for bird-watching; Tērvete Reservoir and Lake Gulbji, near the recreation and tourism centre “Spāre”.
