Brightness in your garden – joyful barberries

berberis rindas

Barberry is one of the favourite summer plants of gardeners. It’s not only because of their incredibly beautiful blossoms in May and June but also because they brighten up yards till late summer and fall. Both, traditionally grown and brand new kinds of barberries are available in JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” Strenči Nursery. Make your garden bright and joyful this summer!

Barberries have a number of different leaf colours – green, yellow, orange, different shades of red, and depending on the variety, they can be in different heights (additional information in the gallery). Barberis thunbergii stands out with the brightest colours of all. They can add a colourful touch to parks and gardens.

Barberries have red, black or green berries; also, each berry has one or multiple oblong seeds. Berries of the most common barberry (Berberis vulgaris) in Latvia are edible. They are very healthy due to the high content of vitamin C.

Barberries are easy to grow. The majority can be grown in a dry, sunny place. There are a few varieties that require a slightly shady place. Well-drained, permeable soil is suitable. It can be both acidic and alkaline, but the plant can also grow in a calcareous soil. But you must be careful with choosing too humid soil because it can disturb development of the plant.

Barberries will look especially beautiful if planted in front of a masonry wall or a fence. Due to their volume, bushes can form a hedge. In combination with roses, barberry leaves will make a beautiful contrast.

If you want to shape bushes, the cutting can be done at the end of summer, than the bush will endure it well. Similarly, plants for multiplication are best used in late summer when they have grown at least 8 cm tall.
