Waiting for Christmas to come is a time full of miracles, candle light and invigorating scents. Of course, Christmas cannot be imagined without a Christmas tree – it can be bought at a market or purchased in a pot at one of the tree nurseries run by JSC “Latvian State Forests”. In December, ahead of Christmas and New Year, Latvian residents are offered the opportunity to find and bring home their own Christmas tree from state forests to decorate rooms, gathering young and old to sing Christmas carols, creating warmth and affection with a forest scent. Crooked or slender, thick or thin – for each it is something personal, and certainly the most beautiful one. In order to keep the forest unharmed, there are a couple of prerequisites to be followed – which trees can be cut down, and where.
State forest territories can be recognized by the yellow road signs of JSC “Latvian State Forests”. Border dike signs, too, indicate when you are on a state forest territory. Before heading to the forest, state forest territories should be checked at mammadabakarte.lv.
A Christmas tree can be cut down at forest roadsides, along trenches, on dikes, under power lines, or in a mature forest under large trees. Meanwhile, felling in young forest plantations and specially protected nature territories, which are marked with an oak leaf sign, is prohibited. A tree must be cut at ground level to prevent forest animals from being injured on a tree stump that is too high.
One must remember that after the holidays, fir branches can be used to cover roses or, in case the branches are needle-less, they can be used as a support for sweet peas. City folk, too, can properly take care of a Christmas tree. For example, the tallest firs can be cut to end and offered to people who use wood to heat their homes.
Christmas trees in pots are becoming increasingly more popular. LVM tree nurseries offer fir-trees of various heights and types: small pyramids, nests, trees with peculiar and sparse crowns, with lots of space for decorations or, for example, trees with a thick crowns that can be decorated with more subtle and smaller decorations.
But, if you want your Christmas tree with eco-decorations this year, LVM main office at 1 Vaiņodes Street will have a Christmas shop open until December 23, offering not only eco-baubles made by staff members of LVM tree nurseries, but also Advent wreaths and many other decorations, which will allow to see and feel the beauty and miracle of nature.
LVM wishes you a bright and magical Yuletide!
