With support from JSC “Latvian State Forests”, a new pedestrian bridge was built this fall in a wooded area on the outskirts of Smiltene. The bridge connects both banks of the Abuls River, thus extending the existing pedestrian and cycling route. The bridge also features a retreat with a place for camp fires, where travelers can relax and regain their strength.
The new bridge is located where the Abuls flows into Tepers Lake. “Previously, in order to get to the other side of Abuls, one had to find a downed tree and nimbly climb over it,” says LVM East Vidzeme Forestry's Silva Forest District Director Normunds Vīksna, assuming that now the number of pedestrians in this Smiltene location will increase.
Forestry staff members gathered together to clean up the nearby forest and a section of the river.
Abuls River bank, full of anemones in the spring, has now become more friendly for walks thanks to a stairway built at the slope of the river.
Following a request from LVM East Vidzeme Forestry, three pedestrian and cycling bridges were restored in the popular cycling route of Smiltene’s forests this year – near Niedrājs and Spieciers lakes.
