For the third year in a row, JSC Latvia’s State Forests in conjunction with the State Forest Research Institute “Silava” and the Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute organized continuing education courses for teachers during the autumn break. This year, the courses were attended by nearly 200 teachers.
In addition to diverse lectures and think-tank workshops, participants in the courses had a field trip to forests, where they had a go at forest management activities under the supervision of forestry representatives. The teachers were also given an assignment – to hold a class in a forest in accordance with “Learning about Forests” methodology.
All participants were handpicked thanks to Mammadaba embassies – Saldus Region Lutriņi Primary School, Kalnciems Secondary School, Mazzalve Primary School, Limbaži Secondary School No.3, Ape Region Sikšņu Primary School, Aknīste Secondary School and Stacija Secondary School. Such courses will also be held in cooperation with Mammadaba embassies during winter and spring breaks.
Continuing education courses “Development of Professional Competence of Teachers in Environmental Education on Sustainable Forest Management” are harmonised with the Education and Science Ministry and implemented within the framework of the international environmental education programme “Learning about Forest”, which has been running in 15 countries worldwide since 1997. The goal of the programme is to promote understanding between teachers and pupils on the diverse importance of forests in our lives and include topics and events related to forests in general education courses.
