No major damage in state forests from autumn storm

On the night to October 29, a low-pressure area crossed Latvia, resulting in high winds throughout the country. In several locations in Kurzeme, winds gusts exceeded 30 metres per second. According to initial information, state forests did not suffer any major damage.

Hardest hit were the forests of Kurzeme, exceeding 35,000 cubic metres (LVM operational data as of 11 a.m.).

Overall, 45,000 cubic metres were affected in Latvia during the storm, mostly individual trees in forest stands and on the edges of clearings. More than 150 cubic metres of trees fell side-by-side in some locations, mostly fir.

Strong gusts were registered in Vidzeme and Kurzeme also in the morning, posing threat to surveying the affected areas. Due to this, some ravaged areas were inspected only in the afternoon.

Latgale forest stands suffered insignificant damage and remained mostly unaffected by the storm.
