Cūkmens (Pigman), the mascot for the JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) campaign “Do Not Litter in Forests!”, is always an eagerly awaited guest at the camps of the Latvian Children’s Fund (LCF). He educates the children, makes them smile and brings out positive thoughts. This summer, the top hero of the fight against litter will visit children to tell them a new story – “today’s nuisance is tomorrow’s peril”.
Cūkmens has already met with several thousand children this spring, participating in various clean-ups and environmental education events. In summer, he will visit more than 600 children from all over Latvia at 28 camps in Engure, Aglona, Alūksne, Kuldīga, Aiviekste, Pļaviņas, Jelgava, Dobele, Nīca, Jūrmala, Ape, Rugāji, Salacgrīva, Kandava, Skrunda, Saldus, Smiltene, Jēkabpils, Ventspils, Talsi, Rēzekne and Līvāni.
Each summer, Cūkmens visits the camps to speak about the importance of picking up one’s own litter in forests and teaching others to do the same. “My long-time activities in education indicate that children have become more reasonable than adults, they litter less and teach parents as well. This will be the ninth year of my visits to schools and children’s camps and I see a positive attitude among the young ones. I am happy to visit them, and see that they are delighted to meet me,” says LVM representative Cūkmens.
LVM and LCF have been cooperating since 2008. LVM donations help organise not only traditional children’s camps, but also specialized camps for children with special needs or disabilities, foster children or children placed under guardianship. LVM is a state owned joint-stock company that ensures sustainable management and protection of state forests.
