The team "Estbirding" (Margus Ots, Andris Klepers, Peeter Raudsepp, Marilliis Martson, Mihkel Metslaid) was triumphant in the international bird-watching competition “LVM Bird Rally 2013” last weekend. The team registered 160 bird species. Six teams of experienced bird-watchers and ornithologists from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania participated, observing and registering a total of 200 bird species.
"LT" (Armandas Naudzius, Marius Karlonas, Vilius Paskevicius, Vytautas Eigirdas) spotted a short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) on the fields of Užava during daytime and was awarded a certificate of recognition for registering the most interesting bird.
The competition was held in the Latvian provinces of Kurzeme and Zemgale and lasted 24 hours (from 11 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 25-26). All teams used their own vehicles to track and spot birds across the entire territory, observing and listening to specific bird species and noting them on the list of Latvia’s bird species. However, in order to be able to register a bird species or subspecies, at least three team members had to establish its presence. Each team consisted of three to five members. “LVM Bird Rally 2013” judges were experienced experts Valdis Roze, Kārlis Millers and Kaspars Funts
