Schools from Madona, Saulkrasti, Grundzāle and Kuldīga triumph in Mammadaba Adventure

1,610 pupils from all over Latvia participated in the Mammadaba Adventure – a special orienteering competition – in the 2012/2013 school year. However, schoolchildren from Madona State Gymnasium, Saulkrasti Secondary School, Kuldīga Secondary School No. 2 and Grundzāle Primary School had the quickest feet and the brightest minds, winning JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) main prize – an orienteering area and equipment in the vicinity of schools.

The winners of the competition received awards on May 23 within the framework of the Mammadaba Orienteering Day in Mežaparks, where children were also greeted by World Orienteering Champion Edgars Bertuks. There, they had another chance to test their swift feet and sharp minds, since, in cooperation with the chain of stores for active recreation “Gandrs”, a new orienteering track - “Get to Know a Tree” - awaited them.

“We are very delighted that we have managed to attract so many enthusiasts to active recreation in nature, because LVM has been supporting orienteering for several years, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle and a connection with nature among young people,” points out LVM Communications Department head Tomass Kotovičs.

Therefore, in cooperation with the Latvian Orienteering Federation, four new orienteering tracks were created in Mammadaba tourism destinations – “Ezernieki” and “Spāre” tourism centres, Tērvete Nature Park and the Vijciems Cone Drying Facility – in the 2012/2013 school year. These recreation areas also hosted the Mammadaba Adventure. During the competition, children had free access to instructors and equipment to not only become familiar with orienteering, but also learn about forests, since there were questions about forest management at each control point.

·       Uldis Upītis from Saulkrasti Secondary School Class 8a achieved the best individual result. He competed in Tērvete Nature Park, completing the track in 12 minutes and providing correct answers to all eight questions.

·       Taking into account the six best results, Zante Primary School Class 5 set the fastest time in Tērvete Nature Park – 3 hours and 12 minutes.

·       Madona State Gymnasium Class 11b was the fastest in “Ezernieki” - 2 hours.

·       Kuldīga Secondary School No. 2 Class 7a had the best result in “Spāre” - 4 hours and 38 minutes.

·       Ērgļi Secondary School Class 7 achieved the best time at the Vijciems Cone Drying Facility – 2 hours and 26 minutes.

These participants will receive special prizes from “Gandrs” and LVM and will be contacted by May 31. Additional information: www.mammadaba.lv/deka.
