JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) regenerated 17,300 hectares of forest in 2012, of which 11,400 were regenerated by planting, the rest – by natural regeneration. 33 million new trees were planted in 2012 - more than 16 per resident.
This year, LVM intends to plant 10,200 hectares of forest. To prevent unnecessary attention from forest pests to newly planted trees, it is recommended to plant them in felling areas a year after logging.
LVM Silviculture Director Mārtiņš Gūtmanis: “Due to close cooperation with the scientists of the State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, reproductive material, artificially selected by Latvian scientists, is used in forest regeneration. It will allow for producing more timber and attracting larger amounts of carbon dioxide in the future.
A cubic metre of timber attracts on average a tonne of carbon dioxide and produces 727 kilograms of oxygen.
