Pupils participate in Forest Career Days to become familiar with “Latvia’s State Forests” work

To inform young people about career opportunities in the forestry sector and change perceptions about working in forests, JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) organised Forest Career Days at nine Latvian schools, Mammadaba embassies, in February.

Pupils had two classes on how “Latvia’s State Forests” works, the importance of forests in global environmental processes, LVM representatives’ personal experience and practical advice. They were also able to find out about educational opportunities in the forest sector and practice with various forestry tools.

February 18 through 22, Forest Career Days were held at nine Mammadaba embassies – Rīga Secondary School No 6, Valmiera Pārgauja Primary School, Palsmane Primary School, Balvi State Gymnasium, Saliena Secondary School, Liepaja Secondary School No 15, Ventspils Primary School No 1, Vilce Primary School and Vecumnieki Secondary School - within the framework of the environmental education programme “Learning about Forests”.

Rīga Secondary School No 6 third-graders had their Forest Career Days on February 19. They watched educational videos, learned about forest insects, tree seeds and tried out forest workers’ equipment. They shared experience about forests strolls, forest tending and growing. Much to our delight, when asked about regular visits to forests, all children raised their hands and children spoke about their positive emotions experienced in forests.

“Learning about Forests” is an environmental education programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education. It is based on gaining practical knowledge, experience and skills, while being in direct contact with the environment and forests. In Latvia, the programme is run by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” and the Education and Science Ministry’s National Centre for Education.
