Even though high winds raged across Latvia on July 28-29, they did not cause extreme damage to state forests. However, separate locations were affected.
According to the company’s operational information, the heaviest storm damage has been established in Kurzeme Province – in the vicinity of Lake Usma and Saldus. In the areas inspected by LVM specialists, the storm pattern indicates that the total damage is not considerable. Nevertheless, the storm was particularly fierce in some locations, breaking and felling several thousand cubic metres of wood.
JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” Silviculture Director Mārtiņš Gūtmanis: “The current information indicates that the volume of wood felled and broken during the July 28-29 storm could exceed 7,000 cubic metres. Forest roads are being cleared and the assessment of storm damage is underway. Taking into account the warm weather conditions, LVM will organize clean-up in the shortest possible amount of time to ensure that the forest’s quality and sanitary state do not deteriorate”.
