Even though there are plenty of fish in Lake Kaņieris, their stocks are regularly replenished with larvae – an average of 400,000 pike larvae is set free each year.
Unfortunately, many larvae perish, therefore it is much more efficient to release juvenile fish.
On July 27, Lake Kaņieris fish stocks were replenished once again. Fish breeder Jānis Priedītis from Rūja had promised the lake 2,500 juvenile pike bred this summer. However, everyone present was pleasantly surprised and the lake received 200-250 gram juvenile pike from last summer. Healthy, with a decent appetite, they will all survive, grow and become every angler’s dream.
People have always dedicated much attention to Lake Kaņieris. The one kilometer long Starpiņupīte Canal was dug in 1905, connecting Lake Kaņieris with the Gulf of Riga. A system of locks was built, ensuring the lake’s water level and accessibility for sea fish. It is no wonder that the lake has always been popular among anglers and birdwatchers. Pike are the most-caught fish in Lake Kaņieris. This year’s record fish weighed 11 kilograms. Although many anglers specialize in tench fishing, they are also tempted by roach, rudd, bream, crucian carp, golden carp and perch.
