Our thanks to last year’s Mammadaba embassies and congratulations to the new ones!

For the fourth consecutive year, the end of May is an emotional period for those nine Latvian schools that have been carrying the title of Mammadaba Embassy. By lowering the flag, other schools are given the sign that the travelling title has found new favourites.

In the 2011/2012 school year, Mammadaba embassies enjoyed countless privileges for their efforts. With the flag waving, the schools headed to the Mammadaba Bird School sessions led by LVM staff members on the Forest Career Days and felt their importance. The school year successfully concluded with the lowering of the flag and festive speeches. The received wooden plaque with the title will serve Rīga Teika Secondary School, Saulkrasti Secondary School, Gulbene Bērzi Primary School, Eglaine Primary School, Ēdole Primary School, Ventspils Secondary School №4, Tukums Ernests Birznieks-Upītis Primary School №1 and Dzimtmisa Primary School as a pleasant reminder of their past experience.

“This is the fourth year when we will grant nine specially-selected Latvian schools the opportunity to carry the title of Mammadaba Embassy for the entire school year. We are proud and grateful that teachers and pupils have highly appreciated LVM environmental education program “Learning about Forests”. Each year, more and more participants want to take part in it. We are hoping that the trend will continue and the acquisition of the flag of environmental friends will motivate other educational entities to pay more attention to not only environmental issues, but also to clean up their surrounding environment,” believes LVM Board Chairman Roberts Strīpnieks.

LVM and the Education and Science Ministry’s National Education Centre previously reached a friendly agreement with a common goal to bring schools closer to nature, accrediting nine of Latvia’s greenest schools as Mammadaba embassies, which actively participate in the LVM environmental education program “Learning about Forests”, involve the highest number of pupils learning about forest activities, participate in cleanups, set up bird houses, plant forests, take part in the Forest Olympiad, visit the Mammadaba objects and integrate environmental education in their schools within the framework of Mammadaba Master Classes.
