May is the month when everyone can be certain that Latvia’s nature is rich in species. At the beginning of the month, many small invertebrates awaken from winter slumber. It is even impossible to list them all. However, they are talented in attracting attention, especially insects. Yet, they are not the only ones to herald spring!
Birds are the most noticeable animals during this period, both – visually and acoustically. This is a special moment in Latvian forests, meadows and cities, since resident birds, passing migratory birds, resting on their way to other countries, and nesting migratory birds, that have returned home, can be observed all at the same time. Many large and small bird species are currently busy improving their demographics, breeding, building nests. Some species lay eggs, perform incubation duties and look after their young hatchlings. However, some nesting birds have not returned to Latvia yet.
The activities of less noticeable vertebrates – amphibians and reptiles – also indicate full-bloom springtime. It is interesting that, contrary to popular belief, Latvian amphibians spend winters on land and not in water. After emerging from hibernation in spring, adult amphibians, with a clear purpose of breeding, immediately relocate to their spawning areas in water bodies. 13 amphibian species are part of Latvia’s fauna; six of them are currently breeding. Consumed by their breeding passion, these usually unnoticeable vertebrates make sure that they are heard and noticed!
Reptiles are much less noticeable creatures - silent and relatively rare. Even though the breeding period has not started for any of Latvia’s seven reptile species yet, the most cold-hardy species – viviparous lizards, slow-worms and vipers are already directing territorial aggression against each other. Grass snakes, however, are rather at peace with each other.
