The joint-stock company “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) has presented awards to 12 laureates, the winners of the three stages of the State Environmental Project Olympiad, at the Mežaparks Exhibition Hall. Cūkmens (Pigman), the protector of clean forests and nature, also arrived to congratulate them.
The State Environmental Olympiad is held for the fourth consecutive year thanks to the cooperation among the National Centre for Education, LVM and the association “Latvijas Zaļā Josta”. The goal of the Olympiad is to educate about sustainable development, teach how to live in harmony with the surrounding environment and prudently use environmental resources, preserving them for future generations. The projects were assessed in the categories of grades 8-9 and 10-12.
Daniels Ancāns, Jaunsilava Primary School grade 9, was the best in the category of grades 8-9 with the project “The Future of Bee Population”. Kārlis Švalbe, Sigulda State Gymnasium grade 12, won the category of grades 10-12 with the project “The Development and Testing of Bacterial Battery”.
In 2009, LVM signed a cooperation agreement with the Education and Science Ministry’s National Centre for Education to promote school children’s awareness and comprehension of environmental regularities, issues and their potential solutions.
