This year has begun unusually. For two whole months warm weather has been holding its position and it has been raining all the time which is not typical for winter. Therefore flowering trees and plants “think” that now it is spring and they start to blossom.
It is known that in the Northern part of Latvia dandelions and in some places even lilacs were growing in the middle of January. And now it happens in Kalsnava arboretum where lilacs have matured their buds which will open and start to blossom very soon. This happens also with hazel-trees and other bushes that blossom in early spring. Among wild species the february daphnes (Daphne mezereum) has started to blossom and soon it will start to scatter its aglets (to scatter anther from male catkins).Among the introduced (domesticated, acclimatised) foreign bushes the rhododendrons and leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata) show their wish to grow. For the time being the Rhododendron ledebourii, Rhododendron mucronulatum and Rhododendron dauricum are blossoming.
