Aftermath of the 2005 Hurricane

In January 7 – 9, 2005, the cyclones coming from the Atlantic Ocean brought about a storm of the hurricane force with the heaviest damages suffered by Northern Europe, including the Baltics. According to the British meteorologists, it was the heaviest storm that has ever hit Northern Europe for the past 16 years.

The farming and forestry were among the sectors of economy that suffered the heaviest casualties. The damages inflicted to the Swedish forestry have no precedent in the country’s history. According to the estimates of the Swedish authorities, the hurricane has thrown down or broken totally about 75 million cu. m of timber, which roughly accounts for the volume of annual harvest. The total damages for Northern Europe, including Latvia, are as high as 85 million cu. m of downed forest.
