It is planned to start the new school year with on-site classes; therefore, in September JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) invites 6th-grade students to go on educating study trips, called LVM Forest Expeditions, holding exciting classes outdoors. The application takes place from 10 to 20 August and schools can choose which of the eight forest regions of Latvia they wish to visit.
LVM Forest Expeditions are a unique opportunity for 6th-grade students to study natural sciences in forest enjoying a joint adventure. They encourage students to explore how knowledge gained in science can be used in their everyday life, performing practical tasks themselves, as well as to develop an understanding of forest conservation for future generations.
The content of the expeditions is designed in accordance with the competence approach in education and the new content of education in natural sciences; moreover, it gives teachers an opportunity to organise the learning process outdoors, where it is possible to ensure social distancing. A total of 320 expeditions are planned to the largest cities in eight regions of Latvia, and they are to take place throughout September. The events are offered free of charge, but the number of places is limited. Schools should submit one application for all classes wishing to participate in the expedition.
LVM Forest expeditions for 6th-grade students will take place for the fifth year in a row and there are about 6 000 participants every year. Throughout the school year as part of the Latvia’s State Forest Expeditions, 6th graders also have the opportunity to go to three permanent LVM Forest Expedition landfills: LVM Nature Park in Tērvete, LVM Kalsnava Arboretum and LVM Vijciems Cone Drying Facility, individually agreeing on the expedition time at the information centres of these facilities. Before going to the forest, students need to have acquired one class about the diverse meaning of the forest.
Forest expeditions are organized by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” in cooperation with the National Centre for Education, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Innovation at the University of Latvia, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, JSC “Latvijas Finieris”, JSC “Husqvarna” and the society “Zaļās mājas”.
