JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) structural unit LVM Sēklas un stādi new tree nursery “Mežvidi” that was opened this spring has started growing seedlings in its newly built greenhouses. Already next spring, it is planned to sell the first pine seedlings grown in Mežvidi nursery in the amount of 3.2 million; the full production capacity – 15 million seedlings per year – will be reached by 2026.
“Active sowing works have been going on in the new Mežvidi tree nursery since the end of March. The first spring pine sowings have already sprouted and grown to a size that they can be taken outside for further cultivation. Since the construction of the plant sorting and storage complex is not yet started, a sowing line has been set up in one of the greenhouses. At the moment, the sowing of the second cycle has started, and we are sowing spruce,” says Laima Zvejniece, Production Executive Director at LVM Sēklas un stādi.
In the spring of 2022, it is planned to sell the first pine container seedlings grown in Mežvidi nursery in the amount of 3.2 million, while in 2023 it is planned to sell 9.6 million pine and spruce container seedlings.
The sale of seedlings grown in Mežvidi nursery is aimed at the widest range of customers: both for the needs of LVM to restore State forests, and for private forest managers in Latvia and abroad. It is planned to grow pine and spruce container seedlings in the nursery. This type of seedlings is in high demand in the forestry sector – they are convenient to plant by hand using special planting barrels; moreover, they are also suitable for mechanized planting, which will play an increasingly important role in reforestation.
