Although the late arrival of spring introduced minor adjustments to the plans for the start of the planting season, the subsequent weather pampered us with a slow and calm spring, which is very suitable for the newly planted forest tree seedlings to grow successfully. Currently, the last planting works are still underway; as soon as they are over, the season for tending of the young trees will start without delay, because due to the high humidity, grass grows really quickly this year,” says Lauris Ropājs, LVM Forestry Production Manager.
In parallel with planting using hand tools, the forest planting season continues with eight excavators, which slowly but carefully perform the planting work mechanically. The bustle of the machinery will continue until the first frosts in autumn.
It is planned to restore and afforest a total of more than 12 000 hectares by the end of the forest planting season in late autumn. A little more than 31 million seedlings are needed to do this. This year, a total of 17.7 million pine seedlings, 10.6 million spruce seedlings, 2 million birch seedlings and about 600 thousand black alder seedlings will be planted in Latvia’s State forests.
In 2020, LVM restored State forests by planting in an area of 10.7 thousand hectares; it planted 28.5 million young trees, which is almost 16 trees per each inhabitant of Latvia.
