JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) has completed the recultivation of the mineral extraction site “Rempji”, preparing the site for afforestation and returning the area to forestry. As part of the recultivation works, the slopes and the territory have been levelled, planning works have been carried out on an area of 3.87 ha, as well as the infrastructure has been arranged – boundary signs, gates and information signs have been dismantled.
The mineral extraction site “Rempji” is located in the Vidzeme highlands, in the Piebalga hills, where a significantly thick layer of Quaternary sediments is most often to be found. However, there are also layers of sand, sand-gravel and clay-sand minerals, wherefrom mineral materials are used in the construction of buildings and roads. Sand and sand-gravel extraction at the mining site “Rempji” was started back in 2011, with a total of 43 000m³ of sand and 16 000m³ of sand-gravel being extracted.
“To manage the land as rationally as possible, in 2020, during the recalculation of the remaining stocks, the preliminary research data on the quality of mineral materials were evaluated and the resources that could actually be extracted were reviewed. As a result, it was found that clay sand in the volume of approximately 200 000 m³ had remained at the mining site, but its quality was low and not suitable for construction needs. As the most appropriate further actions for effective land management, a decision was made to recultivate the deposit by afforesting the area,” says Edgars Ugulis, Production Manager at LVM Zemes dzīles.
Rempji is a settlement in Jaunpiebalga parish. The mining site for sand and sand-gravel minerals surveyed in 2007 is also named after this settlement.
Responsible and sustainable mining allows efficient management of the land owned by LVM, offering the products of the subsoil necessary for the economy, and increasing the value of the managed land.
LVM manages more than 100 mineral extraction sites in the whole territory of Latvia. Quarries have been selected carefully so as not to endanger the environment but at the same time meet the needs of the company and the economy for sand, sand gravel and other minerals. LVM offers mineral materials and their mixtures that meet customer needs, taking into account the resources available at the specific mining site.
