At the end of last year, the construction works of the seedling sorting and processing complex at the Mežvidi Nursery in Jaunkalsnava, Kalsnava Municipality, were completed and the facility was put into operation. With extensive use of wood, a plant sorting and processing complex building with an area of almost 8 300 square meters, a warehouse building, and a landscaped area of two hectares were built in the facility. In the future, the capacity of seedlings grown at the Mežvidi Nursery is planned to be up to 15 million seedlings per year.
“The completion of the construction of the Mežvidi Nursery complex has strengthened the position of JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” as the largest producer of seedlings in the Baltic States. We are currently moving the seeding line to the complex so that it can be used for growing seedlings in the spring. This year, it is planned to install an automatic seedling cassette washing line in the new tree nursery complex and start work on the purchase and installation of the latest generation seedling alternative glue-sand treatment line, which will ensure the protection of the seedlings against damage by the pine weevil. To meet the current trends in the market, we adjust our offer by treating seedlings with alternative means of protection against insect damage. Also, this year, we will start work on the purchase and installation of an automatic packaging line for seedlings in the nursery,” says Māris Druvaskalns, Director of LVM Sēklas und stādi.
The investments made in the construction and development of LVM nurseries until 2027 will allow us to increase the number of tree seedlings grown by 21 % or 11.9 million, reaching a total amount of 68 million seedlings per year. Container seedlings – pine, spruce, and a few deciduous trees – will grow at the Mežvidi Nursery.

“The use of wood in construction is a responsible and sustainable choice. Sustainable solutions have been implemented in the construction works of the new complex of the Mežvidi Nursery: wood is used both in the decoration and in the load-bearing structures. The total volume of wood used in the nursery complex reaches about 600 cubic metres, and the longest built continuous wooden beams reach a length of 30 metres. To promote environmentally friendly management of the building, solar panels for electricity generation and solar collectors for heating hot water have been built on the roof. A pellet boiler will be used for heating. Moreover, the rainwater collection system built from the roof of the building will allow rainwater to be used in the future process of watering the plants,” Uģis Perševics, Construction Manager of the LVM Real Estate Administration, tells about the complex's innovative and sustainable solutions.
